FRP Pultruded Profile Manufacturing Process and Industrial Application

Pultrusion is the manufacturing process that creates a continuous length of FRP (Fiber Reinforced products). Pultrusion produces such products where cross sections are constant. The pultrusion process is a very efficient and effective way to manufacture fibre-reinforced composite products. It allows manufacturers to produce a continuous length of frp pultruded profile shapes.

The meaning of this word is the combination of Pull and Extrusion. This Pultrusion process is new in the industry but its first patent was issued in 1951. This process was developed by the plastic pioneer W. Brandt Goldsworthy, a respected member of the Plastics Academy hall of fame.

Pultrusion is a continuous molding process which uses fiber reinforcement in polyester. Reinforcement materials like fiberglass, mat or cloth are drawn through a resin bath. This process involves pulling these raw materials through a heated steel forming die using a continuous pulling device.

The reinforcement materials that are used in pultrusion processes in continuous forms such as rolls of fiberglass mat and doffs of fiberglass roving. As the reinforcement are saturated with the resin mixture in the resin bath and pulled through a die, the cured profile is formed that corresponds to the shape for the die.

Process advantages:

The process gives maximum flexibility in the design of pultruded fiber reinforced polymer profiles. Color is the same throughout the cross-section of the profile, eliminating the need for many painting requirements. Processing capabilities include the production of both simple and complex profiles, reduce the need for much post-production assembly of components. While Pultrusion machine design varies with part geometry, the basic pultrusion process is the concept that is described in below raw materials list pultrusion process.

List of raw materials used in this process:

  1. Resin
  2. Mat
  3. Roving
  4. Veil
  5. Woven and stitched fabric
  6. Other reinforcing material

Why Pultrusion?

Pultruded composite profiles have seen a high in demand in recent years and for good reason. With the high durability and non-corrosive character traits of fiberglass reinforced polymers, it’s a clear advantage to the customer to select a pultruded profile.

Key advantages of FRP Pultrusion:

  • Corrosion Resistance
  • Chemical resistance
  • Being lightweight
  • High strength and durability
  • Dimensional stability
  • Low maintenance
  • A long lifecycle
  • No- conductivity
  • Low maintenance

Pultruded fiberglass sections provide a unique and unmatched combination of corrosion resistivity, high strength, dimensional stability, and lightweight sections provides free services in most harsh industrial environments where traditional materials like steel, aluminum or wooden have failed to provide all the above properties. These FRP sections are widely used as an alternative to stainless steel and other expensive components.

Applications of Custom Pultrusions:

  • Cable tray supports
  • Fertilizer plants
  • Composite insulators
  • Textile industries
  • Heavy motors
  • Cooling towers
  • Transformer
  • Discharge rods
  • Chemical refineries

There are many companies that are manufacturing the frp pultruded profiles. They are offering various benefits like precise design, good quality, and no maintenance cost at nominal prices.
